Why Consent Logging Matters
Why Consent Logging Matters
Recording user consent serves as legal evidence that helps you — the data controller — demonstrate compliance with privacy regulations like the PDPA. It also protects your organization in the event of disputes or complaints.
What Should Be Included in a Consent Record?
While specific legal requirements for cookie consent logs may not be clearly defined, guidelines from PDPA and GDPR suggest that the following data should be stored:
- Details of the data subject (user) who gave consent
- Information that was collected
- Name of the service or platform used
- Purpose for data usage
- Date and time of consent
How Cookie Wow Records Consent
When a user provides consent, Cookie Wow logs the following information:
Session ID – A unique identifier for tracking the user's session
Timestamp – Exact time the user gave consent
IP Address – The user’s device IP address
Version – The version number of the cookie banner at the time of consent
Additionally, if a user provides consent across multiple categories (e.g., Analytics, Marketing), Cookie Wow logs consent per category separately.
Why Consent Records Are Important in Legal Disputes
- Consent records can serve as evidence of compliance with the PDPA if a user files a complaint or if an investigation is conducted by the PDPC (Personal Data Protection Committee).
For example, if a user claims that your company sent marketing emails without consent, recorded data — such as an IP address or timestamp — can prove that consent was properly obtained.
- These records also help with consent status tracking in your Data Management System.
If a user refuses consent for marketing cookies, your systems will block those cookies accordingly, helping you avoid accidental data breaches and maintaining good security practices.
In summary, consent logging is crucial for privacy compliance, legal protection, and responsible data governance.
